Commissioned Portraits
Commissioning a portrait is an exciting process. As the customer you will be co-creating with me. Keep in mind the following :
Step 1: Planning
The planning stage is the most important because you communicate your vision, we gather information, get to know each other and discuss your expectations. Together we will develop a direction for the painting, a time table and costs. There should be no surprises when you receive your finished portrait.
Step 2: Photography, Live modeling or both?
A good-quality photo is very important, a top notch portrait cannot be done without it, unless the portrait subject has agreed to sit for the portrait during the entire process. It is best to have reference photos and several live sitting sessions. This enables me to see true life colors and capture the character (manerisms) of the portrait sitter.
Step 3: The Drawing , Underpainting, and Final Painting
Once a pose is agreed upon, a prelimary sketch is made. After the sketch is approved, then a value underpainting is executed. At this stage the client reviews and makes any changes desired. The final step is applying washes of colors in layers. The painting can take anywhere from three months to a year to complete depending on its size and complexity. Upon completion a frame is chosen at an additional charge..
Custom Oil Painting pricing starts at $1000 for a (14 x 18 inch) head and shoulders on linen canvas.
