Lighthouse Paintings

Lighthouse Paintings

A Beacon for your home

Before the development of ports,  mariners were guided by fires built on hilltops. Since raising the fire would improve visibility, placing the fire on a platform became a practice that led to the development of the lighthouse. In antiquity, the lighthouse functioned more as an entrance marker to ports than as a warning signal for reefs and promontories, unlike many modern lighthouses.

The first lighthouse in America was the Boston Lighthouse, built in 1716 at Boston Harbor. In 1819, the fifteenth US Congress recognized the need for navigational aides along the Great Lakes and set aside $5,000 to construct a light tower at the entrance to Sandusky Bay which became known as Marblehead Lighthouse.

The paintings below of Ohio Lighthouses were inspired by their structural beauty, historical value, and backdrop of the water. The most famous lighthouses in Ohio are Marblehead Lighthouse and Put-In-Bay Lighthouse on South Bass Island.  Prints of lighthouses are a great way to decorate your home and serve as a wonderful vacation memory.  Although the original lighthouse paintings have been sold, open-edition prints are available through my printing partner Fine Art America.

If you love lighthouses and puzzles, several of these Lighthouse Paintings have been made into jigsaw puzzles, throw pillows, and unique wall clocks!
